Why contractors are hard to find in lead databases
Most contractors are small, owner-run businesses. The owner is on a job site most of the day, and many don't keep the kind of professional profile that contact databases are built from, so a database search for roofing company owners in a small town often comes back thin.
What contractors who want work do keep up to date is how their own customers find them: a Google Maps listing, and usually a website with their services and recent jobs. Those are the two places Ripple looks.
It searches Google Maps for each trade in each town, sets aside chains, closed businesses and companies you already have, then reads each contractor's site to work out who they are, how they work and whether they fit what you sell. Listings without a website are set aside too, since the research needs one.
An example: selling websites and marketing to the trades
Every profile tells your callers who to ask for, what the company does, which software it already uses, including your competitors, and why it fits what you sell, before they dial.
Here is how a team selling websites and local marketing to contractors might describe its ideal customer. Yours will differ, and every line is editable.
- Team size: 2 to 20 people
- Good signs: a website that's missing, dated or hard to use on a phone; few Google reviews for how long they've been in business; growing; owner-run
- Deal breakers: a franchise location or national chain; already works with a marketing agency
- Competitors: do-it-yourself website builders such as Wix and Squarespace

FAQ
Contractor list questions
Is this the same as buying contractor leads?
No. "Contractor leads" usually means homeowners asking for quotes, sold to contractors. Ripple is the other way round: it finds contractors for companies that sell to them, such as software vendors, suppliers, insurers, lenders and marketing agencies.
Can I search for one trade, or several at once?
Either. Each scan has its own list of business types, so you can run a scan for roofers only, or for every trade you sell to. Ripple runs one Google Maps search per business type in each town.
How do I skip contractors who already use a competitor?
List your competitors in your ideal-customer settings. When Ripple spots one on a contractor's website, the lead scores lower on current tools and its call brief carries a caution, so your callers can decide whether it's worth the call.
Does it find commercial contractors too?
Yes, if they're listed on Google Maps and have a website. Add the business types you want, such as commercial roofing or mechanical contractors, and describe what makes a good fit in your ideal-customer settings.
Can I build a contractor list for a specific city or region?
Pick any place on the map and drag the circle to the radius you want. A ripple scan then pushes outward one ring at a time, so you can work a region from the inside out and see how much of each ring has been searched.
How many contractors will a scan find?
It depends on the area and the trades. Before a scan runs, its setup shows the towns it will search, how much of the area earlier scans already covered and what it should cost. You can also cap a scan at a set number of companies.
